All At Once – it had won Everything, Everywhere by sweeping up at the Oscars

It led the pack with 11 nominations, then became the most unexpected record-breaker in the history of the Oscars. No other film has ever won best picture, best director and three acting prizes. Yet barely anyone predicted the definitive awards sweep for Everything Everywhere All At Once.

It was nearly as bonkers as the indie sci-fi comedy itself – but in a good way.

This year’s well-oiled favourites were passed over in favour of the surprise box office hit, which stars multiple incarnations of Oscar-winning Michelle Yeoh – including a three-eyed multiverse-hopping laundromat owner with hot dogs for fingers and, at one point, a talking rock with googly eyes.

The record-setting result has instantly re-written the rules on what an ‘Oscars’ movie looks like.

Increasingly, over the last few years, the trophies have been handed to serious dramas championing worthy causes.

But in an unexpected turnaround, this year marked some rare Oscars recognition for a popular movie that more people might have actually seen – i.e. it’s fun.

Even more bizarrely, Everything Everywhere All At Once is only the third film ever (alongside A Streetcar Named Desire and Network) to win three acting Oscars.

And few – aside from maybe Angela Bassett, whose stony loser’s face became an internet meme – could begrudge a trio of joyful wins that marked inspiring, historic firsts for ethnic representation.

Yeoh became the first Asian woman to win best actress, as her co-stars Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis, meanwhile, triumphed in the supporting actor and actress categories.

Biggest loser on the night, however, was The Banshees Of Inisherin. This brilliant Irish black comedy was up for nine major nominations. But sadly, the nearest the gang got to the podium was when host Jimmy Kimmel led a donkey standing in for Colin Farrell’s co-star, Jenny, on stage to rapturous applause.
