Alize Cornet upends reigning US Open champ Emma Raducanu

There will be no repeat in Flushing Meadows for Emma Raducanu.

The reigning women’s U.S. Open champion fell to Alize Cornet, 6-3, 6-3, on Tuesday.

Cornet, 32, upended the 19-year-old Brit to move onto the second round of the tournament. She will face Katerina Siniakova next.

“I’m sorry, guys. I know you really like Emma,” Cornet told the crowd at Louis Armstrong Stadium. “She’s a great player and a great person.”

Raducanu was outplayed by Cornet while also dealing with blisters on her right hand, the same hand she holds her racket with. She needed a medical timeout after the first set.

With the loss, Raducanu became the third woman in the professional era to lose in the first round a year after winning the Open. Svetlana Kuznetsova, who won it in 2004, and 2016 winner Angelique Kerber also had shortened championship defenses.

The teen sensation didn’t come to the U.S. Open putting much stock in her status as reigning champ.

“I think defending a title is just something that the press makes up,” she said ahead of the tournament.

Since her landmark win, Raducanu is 15-19, losing in the second round of the first three majors of the year.

For Cornet, who came into Flushing as the 40th seed, the night marked her record-setting 63rd consecutive Grand Slam event — though she has to hope this one goes better than the previous 62. She’s gone as far as the quarterfinals once, at this year’s Australian Open.

“I’m handling my emotions better,” she said after the win. “I guess I’m getting old. I’m getting mature. … It’s good because I’m 32. I guess it’s better late than never.”
