Alison Hammond has shared the totally understandable reason she couldn’t say no to becoming the new co-host of Great British Bake Off – cake.

On Thursday the TV presenter was announced as the replacement for Matt Lucas, who left the show after the end of last season.

She will be joining Noel Fielding and judges Dame Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood, sharing the news in a clip where she presented an epic cake-based recreation of the set.

The news couldn’t be ignored when This Morning began on Friday, with Alison congratulated by her co-host Dermot O’Leary.

‘I am very excited,’ she said.

However, when it came to speaking more about the new role, she admitted saying yes was influenced by a specific perk of the job.

‘I’ll be honest with you, I’m just in it for the cake,’ she said.

When we finally see her on screen, it won’t be the first time Alison has appeared on the show though.

Back in 2020 she was on an episode of The Great Stand Up to Cancer Bake Off alongside James Blunt, Alex Jones and Joe Sugg, in which they were all challenged to make mini Yorkshire puddings and a biscuit scene.

Soon after it was revealed Alison was announced as the new host, an old clip from this episode re-emerged.

In a hilarious moment, Alison was left confused for a moment when she thought her oven door had gone missing.

Fans couldn’t get enough of being reminded of the iconic mix-up.

‘Alison Hammond, the woman who thought her oven door went missing when it was tucked under, is going to be the new Bake Off host, and I am here for it,’ one person posted on Twitter.

‘Can’t wait for more moments like this,’ another said.

Someone else wrote that the episode was so hilarious, they go back and watch it ‘in times of need’.

Reminded of what happened live on air, Alison still maintained the door was not where it should have been.

‘I’ve never seen an oven like that,’ she said.

Looking forward, Alison added she was ‘so excited’ and ‘couldn’t wait to meet the bakers and all the team’.

Last month, Great British Bake Off showrunner and executive producer Richard McKerrow revealed the team were still on the hunt for in Matt’s replacement in the tent.

He explained they had been looking for someone who would ‘look after the bakers during their experience and be curious about what they’re baking and to do it with charm, humour and kindness’.

Great British Bake Off is expected to return to Channel 4 in the autumn.

This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV.
