Shark Week will provide never-before-seen footage that shows lesser-known sea animals in their natural habitat.

In Alien Sharks: Strange New Worlds, viewers will get the chance to learn more about the animals which don’t get the same amount of attention as great whites, hammerheads and tiger sharks.

Wildlife biologist Forrest Galante has given an insight into the type of footage we can expect to see during the Discovery special, including one species’ frisky, and violent mating habits that were captured off the coast of South Africa.

When asked about finding out more about underwater life Galante said, ‘most of the ocean remains unexplored,’ and explained his intention to ‘bring the spotlight’ onto the lesser-known sea-swellers.

Galante explained what exactly an ‘alien shark’ is while chatting to TMZ.

‘This is not Discovery’s play on extra-terrestrials. This is alien being the descriptor for how unique, unusual, and bizarre these creatures are.’

He adds that they will be featuring sharks that people have never heard of, including ‘some that glow in the dark, some that are striped, some that are mating in the deep, deep sea – thousands of metres down’.

He also teased that they have the first footage in the world, to his knowledge, of pyjama sharks mating.

Is this instantly making anyone else think of the Friends episode where Monica Geller thinks her husband Chandler Bing enjoys shark porn? Luckily, she is wrong and it’s a big misunderstanding.

They were on their 30th day of diving in a row, and they never realised the impressive footage that they were about to obtain until it happened.

Jason Momoa

‘It is something that’s never been documented before, certainly not on shark week, with that species. Yes, there are scaries, but the magnificent moments like this certainly outweigh those close calls.’

Shark Week, which is hosted by Aquaman himself Jason Momoa, 43, will also feature a ‘strangely acting’ hammerhead shark that might actually be high on cocaine.

Shark Week launches tomorrow on the Discovery Channel.
