Arsenal fan Alex Scott couldn’t help herself as she aimed a Mauricio Pochettino dig at Chelsea during ITV’s Soccer Aid coverage. Pochettino has paused preparations for his maiden season as Blues boss by leading the World XI against England at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Scott fronted the broadcast with co-presenter Dermot O’Leary and wasted no time mocking the Gunners’ London rivals.
After introducing Pochettino as the World XI manager to the camera, the 38-year-old jibed that he could last longer in his Soccer Aid role than at Stamford Bridge.
She joked: “World XI have gone and got themselves a new manager this year. Yes, new Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino.
“Even though Dermot, I think he might last longer in this job than the other one. I’m just saying.”
Pochettino enters the hot seat after Chelsea’s disastrous first full season under new ownership, during which Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghabli sacked two head coaches.
Thomas Tuchel started the campaign as boss just one year after guiding Chelsea to their second Champions League crown.
The German was dismissed in September after two defeats in six Premier League games and a Champions League loss to Dinamo Zagreb contributed to a poor start to the season.
In came Graham Potter after growing his reputation as one of Europe’s most exciting coaches at Brighton and Hove Albion.
But he lasted just seven months of his five-year contract at Chelsea, winning just seven of his 22 league games in charge.
Frank Lampard’s surprise return couldn’t inspire the Blues to end the campaign on a high, slumping to a 12th-place finish, 27 points behind a Champions League spot.
The turbulent season failed to live up to expectations that new ownership would shake off the ruthless managerial changes that fans became accustomed to under Roman Abramovich.
But Pochettino will hope to be at the helm for years to come after enduring a difficult spell as PSG manager, leaving last summer at the end of his 18-month contract.
The Argentine is looking to mark his return to management in England by guiding the World XI to a fifth consecutive Soccer Aid success on Sunday.
