Alec Baldwin has thanked those in Montana for all of their support after the filming of Rust resumed last week.

The actor accidentally shot and killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the Western film in October, 2021, with production paused pending an investigation.

The 65-year-old was initially charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter, before the charges were dropped on Thursday without prejudice.

Filming moved from New Mexico to Montana last week, with Baldwin and director Joel Souza – who was also injured in the incident – returning to complete the movie.

Taking to Instagram, the Hollywood star shared a brief message on his history in the area with fans.

‘We filmed SUPERCELL in Billings,’ he wrote beside a screenshot of a film. ‘Now outside of Bozeman to complete RUST. Montana is stunning.

‘I’m grateful for all of the support I have received here.’

The comments below the post were limited, but many were happy to the 30 Rock lead return to set.

New pictures also emerged of Baldwin during filming, dressed in a grey shirt and dark waistcoat, paired with trousers.

He was seen walking around the area, and speaking to those with him on set.

In February, it was confirmed that the film would be relocating to Montana, with Souza thanking those at the Yellowstone Film Ranch for the invitation to complete Rust at their venue.

‘Their unwavering friendship, support, and now partnership in completing Rust and honoring Halyna means the world to me and our entire production team,’ he said in a statement to the Hollywood Reporter.

‘The beauty of Montana surpasses words, and the warm hospitality and kindness extended by everyone I’ve met has been both humbling and inspiring. It is a privilege to work with such great partners as we see this through on Halyna’s behalf.’

Baldwin has always maintained that he was unaware that the gun contained a live round, and pleaded not guilty to charges of involuntary manslaughter earlier this year.

Days before a preliminary trial was due to begin, the charges were formally dismissed by New Mexico prosecutors, after they said that they were unable to proceed with the case – but insisted that the decision didn’t ‘absolve Mr Baldwin of criminal culpability’.

His lawyers told Metro.co.uk: ‘We are pleased with the decision to dismiss the case against Alec Baldwin and we encourage a proper investigation into the facts and circumstances of this tragic accident.’

However, it was later confirmed that Hutchins’ family would continue on in their civil suit against the Boss Baby actor, with legal representatives insisting that he could not ‘escape from the fact that he had a major role in a tragedy’.

US lawyer Gloria Allred said that he ‘should know that we remain committed to fighting and winning for our clients and holding him accountable for pointing a loaded gun at Halyna Hutchins, pulling the trigger, and killing her.

‘He can run to Montana and pretend that he is just an actor in a wild west movie but, in real life, he cannot escape from the fact that he had a major role in a tragedy which had real-life consequences for Halyna, her mother, father, sister, and co-worker.’
