Alan Arkin dies as family say Little Miss Sunshine star actor is ‘deeply missed’

Critically-acclaimed actor Alan Arkin died at his home in Carlsbad, California and his sons Adam, Matthew, and Anthony confirmed the death of their father.

In a joint statement the family told PEOPLE: “Our father was a uniquely talented force of nature, both as an artist and a man. A loving husband, father, grand and great grandfather, he was adored and will be deeply missed.”

Tributes have since poured in on social media for the beloved actor, as one person tweeted: “Did ANYONE have the range Alan Arkin had? Hilarious, sinister, insane, tragic. No mood he couldn’t live in. RIP.”

Another commented: “Alan Arkin was a fantastic actor. One of my favorite performances of his was him in little miss sunshine. May he rest in peace.”

A third penned: “The great Alan Arkin has passed at 89! He made acting look EASY & always seemed like he was having a ball.”

Another added: “RIP Alan Arkin, legendary actor and World’s Greatest Grandpa in #LittleMissSunshine.”

Arkin was born in Brooklyn in 1934 but moved to Los Angeles 11 years later when his father David, a painter, began working in California as a set designer.

By 1960, Arkin arrived in Chicago and became an early member of the Second City improvisational comedy troupe, according to a history on the organisation’s website.

“Second City saved my life. It literally saved my life,” Arkin said. “I have a feeling it’s true for a lot of other people, too.”

He went on to make his Broadway debut in 1961 in the play From the Second City and followed it up with a Tony-winning performance in 1963’s Enter Laughing.

The actor has enjoyed a longstanding career in Hollywood and his most recent role was alongside Michael Douglas in The Kominsky Method for Netflix, earning Emmy nominations in 2019 and 2020, and Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nominations in 2020 and 2021.

In Little Miss Sunshine (2006), Arkin played Edwin Hoover, the grandfather of the dysfunctional family. His role — which only spanned 14 minutes of screen time — earned him an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

He also starred in the 2012 Ben Affleck-directed political drama Argo which earned him his fourth Oscar nomination.
