Alabama rare underdogs vs. Georgia in projected SEC title game

The biggest game of the college football season is that much closer to becoming a reality. Circa Sports posted a line for the projected Dec. 4 Georgia vs. Alabama SEC Championship game in Atlanta and the Bulldogs are the -3 favorite with a total of 49.5.

Georgia’s biggest test so far has been against Clemson, a game where the Bulldogs were a 3-point underdog to open the season and won 10-3. Since then, Georgia has been favored by at least 14 points in every other game and gone 6-3 against the spread in those nine games.

Alabama has been favored by at least 14 in every game this season. This this would be the Tide’s first underdog role since Oct. 3, 2015 against Georgia, a game that Nick Saban’s team won 38-10 at +1.5 in Athens. Alabama is 6-4 ATS this season.

Assuming the line holds, it will end Alabama’s favorite streak at 92 games. The Tide have been favored in 162 of the last 164 games and will be favored in the last two regular-season games.

Former Saban assistant coaches were 24-0 before Jimbo Fisher and Texas A&M beat the Tide back in Week 6. Georgia head coach Kirby Smart was a Saban assistant from 2007-15.

This is the game that we’ve all been waiting for throughout the season. If Alabama beats Arkansas this Saturday as a 21-point favorite, the game will go from being written in pencil to written in pen. Georgia already has locked up the East Division title with a perfect 8-0 record and Alabama leads the charge in the West Division with a 5-1 mark.

This is the type of game that will draw a massive betting handle and a ton of interest. Georgia has run the table to this point, allowing just 76 points in the process. The Bulldogs have scored 387 points in their 10 games, but Alabama’s potent offense ranks third behind Wake Forest and Ohio State with 446 points. Other sportsbooks will now follow suit posting a line and we should have three weeks worth of betting action to analyze before the heavyweight SEC clash.
