The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has joined hands with the Indian Railways Institute of Signal Engineering and Telecommunication (IRISET), Telangana, to impart training on Railways signalling and ‘KAVACH’- Indigenous Automatic Train Protection System. Two essential streams related to Railways Engineering will include detailed projects such as Railways pilot monitoring, surveillance of train movement and monitoring the speed of trains together with other safety norms. The Indian Railways will provide experts to take lectures and internship opportunities to the students.
Speaking to Education Times, MP Poonia, vice-chairman, AICTE, says, “Students of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) will have the subject related to Railways Engineering dealing with ensuring the safety and security of the trains. While receiving formal education on railway signalling and KAVACH-Indigenous Automatic Train Protection System. Besides, the students will also be taught about the fundamentals of safety in trains, applications of Railways signalling, pilot monitoring, monitoring the speed of trains and the strength of signals.”
Railway experts will train the teachers teaching in AICTE-affiliated colleges in the emerging technologies in the sector. “This is a relatively unexplored domain of Engineering. The initial training for the teachers would involve a visit to railway computational facilities centres and emerging area centres of Railways. Also, during this course, students will get to intern with Railways. The books and the course material shall be provided by the Indian Railways University and this will be implemented from the current academic year. In times to come, we might introduce a two-year specialised PG programme dedicated to Railways Engineering for which discussions are on with various stakeholders,” informs Poonia.
The introduction of subjects related to Railways Engineering is in line with bringing a multidisciplinary educational ecosystem which is in sync with the objectives of NEP 2020. “With the introduction of high-speed trains such as Vande Bharat Express in the country, engineers with specialised expertise in indigenous automatic train protection system is essential,” adds Poonia.
Buddha Chandrasekhar, chief coordinating officer, AICTE, Education Ministry, says, “After pursuing this course, the employability prospects of the students would be high as they would be able to secure job in the metro trains section, passenger trains and freight trains. In addition to this, many Indian engineers go overseas for employment in their Railways networks.”
