AI regulations should not apply to smaller startups: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman feels there shouldn’t be any AI-related regulations on smaller startups in the field of artificial intelligence.

“We have explicitly said there should be no regulation on smaller companies. The only regulation we have called for is on ourselves and people bigger,” he said.

Altman was speaking at ‘ET Conversations’ in New Delhi.

On AI regulation, Altman added: “This is a special moment when the globe can come together”.

Speaking with Times Internet vice chairman Satyan Gajwani, Altman also called for more nuance in conversations around AI regulation.

“There needs to be regulation around the more powerful models. But there has to be enough nuance in the conversation,” he added.Altman said that there were obvious concerns about the darker aspects of this technology, and OpenAI wants to help mitigate that.

Altman feels this is “the most exciting time to start a company since the dawn of the internet’’, and added that AI is over-hyped in the short term but “probably under-hyped in the long term’’.

The OpenAI CEO ruled out that the use of AI will affect creativity: “Human creativity is not going anywhere, but expectations are gonna go up’’.

He also said that the company is not training GPT5, adding that, “we have a lot of work to do before launching it’’.
