AI expert shares tell-tale sign that reveals if you’re talking to a fake person

IT has never been more difficult to detect when you’re interacting with artificial intelligence (AI).

Whether it’s text, video or images – it has become increasingly hard to spot whether it was man-made or generated via AI.

There's a number of clues you can pick up on, if you suspect you're talking to an AI fake - or someone using AI to generate responses

The likes of ChatGPT, which has taken the internet by storm since it was launched in November, are now being deployed by online daters to help them slide into the DMs.

AI is being used by online daters to help them break the ice, with more than half of both men and women considering using machines to help them win dates, research by dating site Inner Circle and cybersecurity firm Kaspersky revealed last month.

There’s a number of clues you can pick up on, if you suspect you’re talking to an AI fake – or someone using AI to generate responses.

But there’s one tell-tale sign, according to Amy Pritchett, a linguist expert turned AI buff, and that is an machines ability to write poetry.

“When you ask ChatGPT if it’s capable of writing a good poem, it isn’t afraid to address its own limitations.

“It states that, ‘As an AI language model, I can generate poems that adhere to certain patterns and rules of poetry. However, the concept of a ‘good’ poem is subjective and depends on personal taste and interpretation.’

“The way ChatGPT works is actually quite simple, as it uses advanced computer algorithms to understand and generate language, similar to how we as humans understand and use language to communicate.

“This process is known as machine learning, and the AI can improve the more it interacts with users and unique queries.

“However, no matter how much the machine learns when it comes to generating text, it will never be able to comprehend and replicate the intricacies and elements of creativity that’s present in our writing.”

Pritchett, who is a linguist at e-learning platform Preply, explained that AI is made to “imitate” humans rather than be original.

An AI model will likely never be able to write top quality poetry in the same way a human can.

Although, of course, the person you’re talking to could very well be real and simply a rubbish poet.

“It learns to say the least surprising thing, so when you ask them to write something creative, striking, and metaphorical, it’s likely to be underwhelming,” she says.

AI poetry relies very heavily on simple rhymes, and is more likely to repeat the same word to make sure two lines rhyme.

“Poetry is seen as a form of literary art, with its heightened states of emotion, intimate address, and metaphorical descriptions,” she adds.

“It’s art that can only be created with intense creativity and abstract thinking, something that AI is not capable of, yet.”

If you suspect you’re talking to an AI – or even someone new – be sure not to reveal any personal information such as your email or residential address, as well as any banking details.

If you think someone is using AI to generate their responses on messages, it might be worth taking the date into the real world.

But with every first, second or third date, be cautious. Meet in a public place and let a friend know your location.
