AFL star called out over risky flood behaviour

Brisbane Lions midfielder Mitch Robinson has tried to brighten up the ongoing floods situation in south-east Queensland, sharing what he thought was a light-hearted video on social media.

The popular larrikin posted a video to his social accounts which showed the Lions hard man standing in his flooded backyard, decked out in only his club budgy smugglers and a pair of googles.

“Always wanted a lap pool! #brisbanefloods,” Robinson wrote in the caption.

In the video, Robinson can then be seen diving into the murky flood waters to give his best Ian Thorpe impersonation. He swims a small loop of his yard all while Bruce McAvaney’s swimming commentary plays over the top of the clip.

But in the comments section, some viewers voiced their concerns, indicating that Robinson did not know the exact contents of the water, which may have been contaminated by sewage.

Journalist Benjamin Law was one to point this out to Robinson, tweeting: “Last time Brisbane flooded there were official warnings about the water because it was absolutely HEAVING with human waste.”

Whilst flood water often look unassuming, floods can mask chemicals, excrement, rubbish and animal remains under the surface, contributing to an increased risk of infection.

However, Robinson did not seem too worried when responding to a handful of comments, stating he was already soaked “cleaning up and taking care under [the] house”.

He responded to one commenter with a tweet that said: “Could get sick walking into a cafe, don’t know why you’d feel the need to tweet that.”
