AFL player’s future in doubt over vax stance

A Carlton player’s AFL future is hanging in the balance as they have not received a Covid vaccination and risk being banned from playing.

A Carlton player’s AFL future is hanging in the balance after it was revealed they are yet to be vaccinated against Covid-19.

Under the AFL’s vaccination policy announced last month, all players must have be double-vaccinated in order to play in next year.

According to the Herald Sun, the player, who has not been named, is among Carlton’s senior ranks and has been in ongoing discussions with the Blues about their concerns regarding the vaccine.

The AFL has set a deadline of February 18 for all players in the competition to be double vaccinated, but under the Victorian government’s mandate, all players must have received two doses by November 26 to attend their workplace.

The Herald Sun reports the player in question is not required at the club until the start of pre-season training on December 6, he would not be allowed to return to Carlton’s headquarters at Ikon Park until he is double vaccinated.

Under the AFL’s guidelines, if a player is unvaccinated, their contract can be terminated or they can be placed on the inactive playing list on a minimum wage.

At the time of last month’s deadline for all players to receive their first dose, all Victorian clubs except two had confirmed all players had received at least one dose or were booked to do so.

Channel 7 AFL reporter Mitch Cleary said: “St Kilda has opted not to comment while Carlton said it would only comment closer to the start of pre-season, despite confirming all of its AFLW players had received at least one dose”.

It comes after AFLW star and Adelaide Crows premiership player Deni Varnargen was moved to the club’s inactive list due to her refusal to receive a Covid vaccination.

Varnhagen, who works as an ICU and anaesthetics nurse, has been outspoken on the matter of vaccines and last week she attended a protest against a South Australian government mandate requiring vaccinations for healthcare workers.

The Crows confirmed the 29-year-old would be moved to the inactive list, which means Varnhagen is still contracted to the club, but she is not allowed to play.
