Advice on how to effectively work during your GCSE’s L.Graves, Epsom College
As GCSE’s approach you may need advice on how to manage the stress of the upcoming exams, I am currently in year 12 and completed by GCSE’S between 2020-2022. GCSE’s can be extremely stressful, and they are the first important exams that as a teenager you probably come across. So, I have compiled advice from friends, teachers as well as myself on the best way to manage the workload during your GCSE’s.
- Firstly, I would recommend splitting revision up into categories: making notes (flash cards etc), actively revising those notes (memorising them testing yourself, and lastly active work, like doing practice papers or practice essays. Using this method makes approaching your revision less overwhelming. It splits the workload and ensures you get practice in as well as taking to time to learn the content.
- Practice papers and mark schemes. Doing practice papers is a key part of ensuring the maximum number of marks possible, there are many online and I would recommend Physics and Maths tutor. Doing practice papers helps you understand how exams are structured and the layout of certain questions. Going through the mark schemes also gives you an opportunity to learn what key words you should be using, specifically in sciences, as well as how to reach the targets.
- Balance. Having balance in your life and not just revising will make sure you get the best outcome possible. You should never priories revision over sleep or food. If you are tired or hungry during an exam you will not be able to perform your best and if you are revising in those conditions as well it will make it much more difficult to focus and retain information.
These are the three main tips I received and also what worked best for me. Some websites and apps that can also help are:
- Corbett Maths
- Physics and Maths Tutor
- Flora (app)
- BBC Bitesize
- Cognito
