Addicks face Championship competition for relegated free agent

THE ADDICKS are facing competition from Championship clubs as they reportedly eye a deal for free-agent Jack Tucker.

The central defender is available on a free transfer following his release from Gillingham. Tucker was one of the Gills best players last season, making 44 appearances but he was unable to help the club avoid relegation to League Two.

Charlton’s new boss Ben Garner is on the lookout for reinforcements as he aims to put his stamp on the squad.

Garner was announced as the new manager last week, replacing Johnnie Jackson who was relieved of duties at the end of the season and has since moved to AFC Wimbledon.

Tucker would be a smart acquisition by the Addicks as there would be very little financial risk and at 22-years-old he has plenty of time to improve his game and become an even more effective defender.

According to The Sun, however, the Addicks will face competition from Championship sides Reading and Swansea City in the battle for the defender’s signature.

Reading are currently under a transfer embargo, which could dent their hopes of signing Tucker due to the compensation that could be owed to Gillingham, but can sign free agents as there is space in their squad.

Gillingham manager Steve Evans believed transfer speculation surrounding Tucker started to affect his performances on the pitch back in October.
