Adam Kay’s oddest encounter as doctor? ‘I removed Kinder egg from her privates’
Adam Kay, the writer behind best-selling book and the upcoming BBC comedy This Is Going To Hurt, has revealed the most peculiar item he removed from a patient – a Kinder egg.
Next month, Kay’s best-seller will be adapted on the small screen with Ben Wishaw starring as the junior doctor struggling with the unreasonable demands put on the underpaid NHS.
Ahead of the series premiering on BBC, Kay, 41, has recalled a particularly surreal moment from his junior doctor days after an engagement went horribly wrong.
When proposing to her boyfriend, one woman hid a ring inside a Kinder egg and popped it inside her vulva where it say waiting for him to find it.
Only, the chocolate egg got stuck and she ended up in A&E where Kay had to use a set of forceps to remove it, before handing it back to her understandably confused partner.
Thankfully, after the ordeal, said partner said yes so hopefully it was all worth it.
Kay said he was insistent the Kinder egg catastrophe made it into the show.
‘I think that is my favourite story in the book,’ he told The Sun.
‘I was desperate that the Kinder Egg made it into the show.
‘The BBC promised me one thing right at the start, which was that they wouldn’t say, ‘You can’t do that’.
‘And they’ve been totally good to their word. I don’t think you could watch it and think it looks like a censored show, which was really important.
‘That’s part of getting the truth of the NHS and the job out there.’
Kay’s book This is Going To Hurt, made up of a collection of diary entries from his time as a junior doctor from 2004 to 2010, with both hilarious and harrowing results.
The official synopsis of the show reads: ‘At times hilarious, at times devastating, This is Going to Hurt is a series following Adam, a doctor who we find wending his way through the ranks of hospital hierarchy. Junior enough to suffer the crippling hours, but senior enough to face a constant barrage of terrifying responsibilities.
‘Adam is clinging to his personal life as he is increasingly overwhelmed by stresses at work: the 97-hour weeks, the life and death decisions, and all the while knowing the hospital parking meter is earning more than him.’
This Is Going To Hurt airs February 8 on BBC One and will be available to stream on BBC.
