Adam Hills was quick to acknowledge that he may have overstepped the mark with a risky submarine joke on Friday’s episode of The Last Leg – but he doubled down on it anyway.

The 52-year-old comedian dropped the savage gag just one week after it was confirmed that the missing Titan submersible fatally imploded during an expedition to the Titanic, killing five people.

The one-liner was made during a discussion of The Wagner’s recent failed attack on Vladimir Putin’s authority, with Adam pointing out ‘it’s hard to know who to cheer for’.

‘This is like the time Jeremy Clarkson punched Piers Morgan,’ he continued. ‘This is like Elon Musk taking on Mark Zuckerberg in a cage fight.

‘Most of the planet is thinking, “yeah instead of a cage, can it be a submarine?”’

Although the audience was quick to let out a collective ‘ooft’, Adam then doubled down.

‘Yeah okay, probably shouldn’t have gone there… but nor should they,’ he quipped.

Somewhat surprised by Adam’s joke, fellow presenter Alex Brooker remarked: ‘Tell you what, I love it when you just get back from Australia. You don’t give a f*ck.

‘You’re like Mario when he walks into a mushroom.’

Adam’s brutal joke didn’t go unnoticed by viewers either, although many seemed to be in favour of it.

‘Cor that was a brave gag, although spot on!’ one tweeted in response, while another said: ‘Prob shouldn’t have gone there. Neither should they. Good sub joke.’

A third posted: ‘The joke about the submarine has plunged #TheLastLeg to new depths.’

‘I support Adam Hills’ submarine joke,’ added a fourth.

British adventurer Hamish Harding and father and son Shahzada and Suleman Dawood were killed on board the deep-sea vessel Titan, alongside OceanGate Expeditions’ chief executive, Stockton Rush, and French national Paul-Henri Nargeolet.

The submersible lost contact with tour operator OceanGate Expeditions an hour and 45 minutes into the two-hour descent to the wreckage of the Titanic on June 18.

The vessel was reported missing eight hours after communication was lost.

The Last Leg airs Fridays at 10pm on Channel 4.
