Academic setbacks – Chhavi Saini, Townley Grammar School

As exam season is approaching for many of us, academic setbacks or things that we call ‘failures’ will be something that all of us are, or will struggle with.

So what happens when we ‘fail’? What happens when things don’t exactly go to plan?

When we are rejected or don’t achieve the grade we aimed for? What do we do!

Relax. It’s natural to be disappointed and that’s okay and very valid. It is a part of life for such things to happen. The best thing you can do is find ways to make yourself feel better, focus on the present and talk to people. I know you may have heard this many times, but it is imperative to let the people you trust the most know about how you are feeling.

Don’t ever compare yourself. This is your journey and yours alone, and you are your own priority. I know, right now, whatever has happened may be the only thing that is on your mind. But I promise, it will get better. I promise, this is the best for you, and you will feel lighter. Anything that happens is for the good of yourself.

Exams never define your worth. Academic success is something that is expected of everyone, and this is very wrong. Everybody has their own strengths and weaknesses and this can never be shown in a short, one day, timed test. Or one interview on a particular day. It’s pretty ridiculous!

While acquiring any kind of knowledge is beneficial, it is important to remind yourself that this is not all there is to life. School is one of our very first big milestones as teenagers and so it is normal to worry and overthink about such things. You have only just begun, there are many more things coming your way, very good and very bad. And each time, you will get stronger, and learn. What you decide to do next is most crucial.

Setbacks are a blessing in disguise. Think about what positive this has done for you, rather than negative. Do you know what to do next time? Do you know that maybe something actually isn’t right for you? Growth mindset is a word that is thrown around a lot, but maybe it’s worth some research and reflection. This is your sign, to improve.

Finally, reflect. Apart from all of this, there are millions of beautiful things to be grateful for. Focus on that. You are brilliant in many ways.

Setbacks are how we learn, we grow and we become more determined, and I believe in you.

The mind is a very powerful thing, so in the end, it’s all up to you. How you choose to handle a situation. No matter what, pick yourself up and keep going, and keep working your hardest.

At the end of the day, I promise, it really is not that deep. 🙂
