‘absentees Can Sit For Supplementary Test’ | – Times of India

BHUBANESWAR: The state government on Tuesday announced that students who remained absent in the ongoing matriculation examination (summative assessment-II) can appear for the supplementary exam.
“If any student expresses interest in appearing for the supplementary exam, we will allow him/her to do so since that will help the students in continuing with their academics,” school and mass education minister Samir Ranjan Dash said, adding, “Even if a student has not appeared for the summative-1 exam, he/she can pass the exam by securing 30% in the supplementary and practical tests collectively.”
Around 13,058 students were absent from the exam, which is 2.5% of the total number, Dash said, adding that in the 2021-22 session, around 7.7 % of the total number of students, which is around 45,091, did not appear for the exam.
The government is planning to launch a door-to-door survey to trace the absentee students. “Even last year, the government had launched a similar survey,” Dash said.
The matriculation exam, which is being conducted by the Board of Secondary Education, started from Friday and will be over by March 20.
Earlier in the day, leader of opposition Jayanarayan Mishra raised the issue of absentee examinees in the ongoing exam during Zero Hour in the assembly and sought the government’s intervention. He also criticized the 5T transformation of schools initiated by the government and the poor academic standards of the students.
“It is a matter of concern that so many students did not turn up for the exam. Odisha has the highest number of dropouts in Classes VIII, IX and X. Instead of painting the school buildings in the colour of Pakistan’s national flag, the government should focus on improving the quality of education. Is this 5T where students don’t come to sit for exams and are very poor in academics?” Mishra said while speaking to media persons outside the assembly.
In reply, BJD MLA Arun Kumar Sahoo said, “It’s ridiculous that the opposition leader is comparing the 5T initiative with Pakistan. Can’t the leader of opposition see that our Tricolour also has green in it. If he has a problem with that colour, then he should not eat vegetables or look at leaves as their colour is also green.”
