Abandoned Hospital To be Renovated – Eashan Aldridge Hampton School
A mental health inpatient facility in Barnes is set to be converted into housing, a school and a cutting edge new mental health centre. The abandoned site lies next to the Old Mortlake Burial Ground. Originally built in the late 19th Century, the Hospital gradually shifted to a mental health inpatient site. By the 1990s, the buildings there were entirely used for the care of mental health patients. However, the site has been completely empty since 2013. It is in great need of repair and renovation.
The site is owned by South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust. The trust will remain owners for some of the site while other parts of the site were sold to a developer in March 2019. The developer intends to use the site for housing. While some basic plans regarding the site were submitted to the Council over 2 years ago and accepted, another full plan is currently being finalised. This plan is regarding the proposed mental health facility and school on the site. The housing proposal features the building of 106 flats and renovations of several other houses lying on the site. A decision is currently being made by Richmond Council on the plans.
The Trust stated that in order to improve care and aid funding, surplus parts of the site were sold. This project is part of a wider renovation project by the Trust. This would see two other inpatient sites redeveloped in Wandsworth and Kingston. The educational facility at the Barnes site will be a Special Educational Needs School which will be operated by the Beckmead Trust.
