Aaron Carter’s ex-fiancée disputes coroner’s report of his cause of death

Aaron Carter drowned after huffing compressed gas and taking generic Xanax, according to an autopsy report obtained Tuesday by The Post.

Carter had inhaled difluoromethane, an odorless gas, and taken alprazolam, which is known as generic Xanax, before he was discovered submerged underwater in a bathtub at his Lancaster, California, home on Nov. 5, according to findings from the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner.

It was previously reported that compressed air cans and pill bottles were found at the scene.

Carter was 34. His death was ruled an accident.

His reps declined to comment to The Post on Tuesday.

Melanie Martin — his ex-fiancée and mother of his son, Prince — told TMZ on Tuesday: “The results of the autopsy are not closure for me. It claims death is by drowning but also adds he was wearing a T-shirt and necklace in the bathtub which doesn’t make sense, why would he be in a bathtub with clothes on?”

“I am still in shock and still miss Aaron every day. I don’t understand the chain of events and this report only has us asking more questions,” she added.

Martin previously stated that she believed Carter was murdered.

The Post reached out to Martin for comment.

Carter’s death certificate, which was made public on Nov. 16, stated he had been cremated less than a week after his death. A statement regarding his cause of death was delayed pending a toxicology report.

In its new report, the coroner’s office noted that difluoromethane can lead to sudden cardiac arrest, while alprazolam can cause drowsiness and sedation.

Just one day before Carter was found dead, police reported visiting his home for a “welfare check” after he was “seen/heard” huffing on Instagram Live, according to police notes that accompanied the autopsy report.

“Deputies from the LASD Lancaster station made contact with the decedent; the decedent was inside his home and yelled at them to get out from the stairs,” the report stated.

Investigators noted that Carter was supposed to check in with an outpatient drug counselor on Nov. 4, but missed the phone appointment.

Carter’s housekeeper, who was reportedly a homeless woman he took in just weeks before his death, became concerned when she knocked on his door the following day to offer him coffee and he did not respond.

She found him “fully submerged” in the bathtub, called 911 and performed CPR, according to the police report.

Carter was wearing a T-shirt and necklace, and the bathtub water was “green and had a foul odor,” according to the report.

No foul play was suspected, according to investigators, who noted his history of drug abuse.

A person whose name is redacted in the report, but appears to be Martin, told investigators she last spoke with Carter by text on Nov. 3. He had allegedly expressed to her that he wanted to go to rehab in Florida, but couldn’t leave California until December due to a “court date/drug program commitment.”

About a week before his death, Martin also contacted police with concerns that Carter was driving his RV under the influence. Police reported making contact with him, but did not arrest him.

Carter was a musical prodigy who found fame and trouble at an early age.

As the kid brother of Backstreet Boys member Nick Carter, a then 9-year-old Aaron served as the group’s opening act on tour in 1997. He signed a record deal and solidified himself as a household name in his own right with hits like “I Want Candy” and “Aaron’s Party.”

A young love triangle with Hilary Duff and Lindsay Lohan circa 2003 garnered him even more attention. Both of his former teenage flames released statements after his death.

The “Sooner Or Later” singer struggled with mental health and substance abuse difficulties for years. He reported smoking “a lot of weed” as a teenager.

He appeared on “The Doctors” in 2017 malnourished and tested positive for “a mixture of benzodiazepines with opiates” that he claimed were prescribed for anxiety and sleeping.

He returned to the show in 2019, claiming to have been diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Carter also became estranged from his family, as both twin sister Angel and Nick sought a restraining order against Aaron in 2019 after he admitted having thoughts about killing Nick’s then-pregnant wife.

Carter’s sister Leslie died of a drug overdose in 2012. Seven years later, he publicly accused her of sexually assaulting him in his preteen years.

He is survived by his son, Prince, who was born in November 2021.
