A TV version of Cronenberg’s ‘Dead Ringers’ on Prime and Betty Gilpin in ‘Mrs. Davis’ on Crave

With so many different streaming platforms and cable offerings to navigate, choosing what to watch has never been harder. To make things easier, here are our best tune-in tips for the week ahead.

TUESDAY

Longest Third Date

The third date is often pivotal in a new relationship. While most new couples consider taking the next steps in their intimacy by date No. 3, Khani Le and Matt Robertson decided to change things up for theirs, taking a trip to Costa Rica to add some spice to their blossoming relationship. If you’re wondering why the streaming service would dedicate an entire doc to this decision, the answer is simple. Khani and Matt’s 2020 trip just happened to take place at the start of the COVID-19 lockdown, turning their rendezvous into the longest date ever. Wonder if they regret not sticking with dinner and a movie.

Netflix

THURSDAY

Mrs. Davis

Tara Hernandez and former “Lost” mastermind Damon Lindelof are behind this one that stars three-time Emmy nominee Betty Gilpin. The series is about a nun named Simone (Gilpin) who lives in an alternate version of 2023 where life is, for all intents and purposes, controlled by an artificial intelligence system known as “Mrs. Davis.” The news release describes it as “an exploration of faith versus technology and an epic battle of biblical and binary proportions.” Apparently in this world, almost every decision is made by an algorithm.

Crave

The Diplomat

Keri Russell stars in this new series about a career diplomat who lands a high-profile job as the new U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom. Kate Wyler (Russell) must rely on her crisis management skills to defuse international tension and make new alliances in London. The series has been compared to “Homeland” (not really that surprising as “The Diplomat” is the brainchild of Debora Cahn, a former writer and producer on the Showtime series) and provides another chance for Russell to lead a show, which she has become accustomed to after her successful stints on “Felicity” and “The Americans.”

Netflix

Mike Judge’s Beavis & Butt-Head

A second season of the rebooted adult animated comedy debuts on Paramount Plus. The original series that aired from 1993 to 1997 was praised for its scathing commentary on society and we can expect more of the same with these new episodes.

FRIDAY

Dead Ringers

Prime Video grabs the top spot of the week with “Dead Ringers.” A new take on David Cronenberg’s 1988 film, the series stars Rachel Weisz as a pair of twins named Elliott and Beverly Mantle. The twins who share everything (and I do mean everything from drugs to lovers) begin to “push the boundaries of medical ethics” in a thriller that promises to be both scintillating and scandalous.

Prime Video

A Tourist’s Guide to Love

Rachael Leigh Cook made a name for herself in rom-coms like “She’s All That” in the ’90s. Now she returns in similar movie “A Tourist’s Guide to Love” as Amanda, a travel executive whose recent breakup pushes her into accepting an assignment as an undercover tourist in Vietnam. That’s where she meets expat tour guide Sinh (Scott Ly) who sweeps her off her feet.

Netflix

Ghosted

Another new rom-com this week is “Ghosted.” This one is about a guy named Cole (Chris Evans) who falls in love with Sadie (Ana de Armas) before realizing the object of his affection is actually a secret agent. This leads to the pair being swept away on an international mission to save the world.

Apple TV Plus

One More Time

This Swedish comedy is the country’s take on the 1993 Bill Murray classic “Groundhog Day.” When 40-year-old Amelia (Hedda Stiernstedt) is struck by a truck on the night of her birthday, she wakes up in 2002 when she turned 18. While the prospect of living the best day of her life over again sounds appealing, Amelia eventually realizes she needs to figure out what to fix to get back to where she belongs.
