A Suicide Squad Member Now Shares Powers With a Classic Spider-Man Villain
Suicide Squad #13 sees a supporting character gain superpowers very similar to a Spider-Man villain, though they did not get this upgrade last issue.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for War for Earth-3 #1, on sale March 1 from DC Comics.
Suicide Squad gives DC Comics its very own Sandman — well, another one.
No, this isn’t the Neil Gaiman creation published by DC, The Sandman, soon to make its live-action debut on Netflix. A preview for Suicide Squad #13 written by Dennis Hopeless and Robbie Thompson shows that supporting character Dr. Rodriguez is about to get a major upgrade, going from powerless to a giant force to be reckoned with. Her powers appear to be just like those of the classic Marvel villain who debuted in The Amazing Spider-Man #4 back in 1963.
Dr. Rodriguez, on the other hand, is a fairly new character who first appeared in Suicide Squad #5 last year. The last time we saw her in Suicide Squad #12, she had been shot and was assisting Col. Rick Flag in an attempt to bring down Amanda Waller, an attempt which didn’t end well. Being that the upcoming issue is the second part of the War for Earth-3 event, it is likely that this upgrade takes place in War for Earth-3 #1, which is also on sale Tuesday.
War for Earth-3 will be a five-part crossover between Suicide Squad, The Flash and Teen Titans Academy, with the version of Earth-3 explored being that of last year’s Crime Syndicate miniseries. Waller has been orchestrating a plan for laying claim to Earth-3 in Suicide Squad, which has involved Multiversal kidnappings, bringing dead villains back to life and more. Flag went against Waller on her plans and formed his own squad of villains to take her down, which Dr. Rodriguez now appears to not only be helping, but serving as a team member on.
The event also spells a last hurrah for Suicide Squad and Teen Titans Academy, being that it was recently announced that both titles will be ending with their respective fifteenth issues. The series are the only two involved in the event to have crossed over beforehand, though The Flash did see Heat Wave forced onto a Suicide Squad by Amanda Waller, but this was explored in the limited Swamp Thing series from last year instead. The preview and solicitation for Suicide Squad #13 can be found below.
