A ‘Strevolution’ at Daggers gives fans optimistic buzz

The new man in the dugout, intent on having his own players to implement his philosophy on the pitch, has only fuelled the optimism, having certainly impressed supporters with his recruitment so far. 

Ben Strevens’ prudence in delivering the high calibre of players he has so far only affirms the hopes many had around his appointment, his ability to attract the right players to Victoria Road, given his expertise in players at this level.

Amongst the signings are those with experience at a higher level, but also those still with a point to prove in the National League, a balance Strevens’ predecessor attempted to strike but never quite accomplished. 

Strevens also has the support of a new man at the top of the club, who looks to bring a fresh perspective, an appointment warmly welcomed by supporters who have been calling for this change for some time.

Todd Johnson’s appointment as Executive Vice Chairman, following his departure from Wealdstone, is an exciting sign of renewed ambition both on and off the pitch.

Todd is keen on bringing in more exciting prospects on the pitch, the likes of Tom Eastman at centre-back, a commanding presence with over 12 years of Football League experience, and will seek to iron out the areas that cost the Daggers dearly last campaign – defensive errors, particularly being vulnerable in the air.

The defensive reinforcements were also found in contract extensions – keeping hold of star players can be just as crucial as getting top talent through the door at this level (something Dagenham & Redbridge know more than most) – with Elliot Justham and Sam Ling both committing their futures to the club. 

Strevens’ business in the transfer market has been impressive overall, in spite of initial reservations at the lack of retention in the retained list, the replacements have been of better quality – an instant sign of steps being taken in the right direction.

The offloading of players high on the wage bill in order to get these arrivals in shows too that Strevens is assembling a squad thoughtfully; he appears to be clear in knowing what he wants. 

This clear knowledge and foresight is also seen to be reflected in the players, all repeating the vision and philosophy of the manager heading into the new campaign – a desire to be a team that is difficult to beat.

This has certainly not been the case often enough, as alluded to in the comments of the defensive records in recent seasons; too often chasing games or throwing them away cheaply.

However it is obvious that more recruits are needed for the ‘Strevolution’ to be a success, and some more support up top for Inih Effiong would be welcomed, as well as an improvement in depth across the team – essential for the relentless nature of the fixture schedule.

The first pre-season fixture at Aveley gave supporters a first glimpse of Strevens’ new-look side and the fresh faces certainly impressed, in particular goalscorer Ryan Hill who excited with his flair down the left side. 

With preparations for the new season intensifying this week, hopefully some new arrivals are welcomed to Victoria Road and the squad begins to take real shape.
