‘A matter of time’ for Supercars driver’s NASCAR move

Brodie Kostecki looks set to follow Shane van Gisbergen and make a move across the United States to make his NASCAR Cup Series debut.

Kosteck isn’t entirely unfamiliar with the scene having raced in the development ARCA series in 2013 and 2014, a few rungs under the NASCAR ladder.

Rumours have long lingered that Kostecki would look to make a competitive return to the United States.

Now his manager Nathan Cayzer has revealed a deal is imminent.

“It looks good at the moment,” Cayzer told Supercars Trackside.

“Hopefully over the next week, we’ll get something locked away and we’ll see the young fella in one which is exciting for him.

“I think it’s just in his blood to want to do it,” he added.

“It’s just a matter of time when we can get him in one and when we do I’m sure he’ll do us all proud and do really well.”

Asked whether a deal could be put together, Cayzer said “I think so, I don’t think it’ll be a problem. People want to support him and that’s the most important thing.”

Kostecki raced on ovals and road courses as a teenager in the ARCA series, claiming a career-best fifth in his final race at Dover International Speedway before returning to Australia.

The Perth product made his Super2 Series debut in 2017 before stepping up to Supercars in 2019 as a wildcard.

He finished on the Bathurst 1000 podium in 2021 with David Russell and with the introduction of the new Gen3 regulations finds himself atop the standings with two race wins.

In between events, Kostecki made a trip to the United States with his Erebus Motorsport team where they observed Richard Childress Racing.

The team was on hand for the RCR’s third win of the season with Kyle Busch at Gateway, Illinois.

“It was actually a pretty awesome trip,” said Kostecki.

“We were able to take the two race engineers over there, George (Commins) and Tom (Moore), and Will (Brown) hasn’t been to a NASCAR race before, so we got to blow his eardrums out as they passed by.

“It was really cool and it was great for them just to see a whole different world over there.”

Should a deal come to fruition for Kostecki to compete in the NASCAR Cup Series, then that would likely come at a non-oval.

The Chicago Street Course is the first of those on July 3, but Cayzer’s comments would suggest that is unlikely given that event is just two weeks away.

Beyond that, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course race on August 14 seems the most likely option given the other two at Watkins Glen (August 20) and the Charlotte Roval (October 8) conflict with Supercars events at Tailem Bend and the Bathurst respectively.

One Supercars driver already confirmed to make their NASCAR Cup Series debut in van Gisbergen, who will contest the inaugural Chicago street race with Trackhouse Racing.
