A Major X-Man Returns from the Dead with a Dangerously Villainous Upgrade

Having been stabbed in the chest by Omega Wolverine, Moira MacTaggert rises from the grave with a new cybernetic body in X Deaths of Wolverine #5.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for X Deaths of Wolverine #5, now on sale from Marvel Comics

Wolverine, Laura Kinney, Scout and Daken may be successful in saving Krakoa from the Phalanx-infected Wolverine in the X Deaths of Wolverine finale, but a new threat that emerges at the end of the issue is about to potentially lead the X-Men into an even darker future than ever before.

In X Deaths of Wolverine #5 — by Benjamin Percy, Federico Vicentini, Dijjo Lima, and VC’s Cory Petit — Moira MacTaggert is facing death’s door after she’s stabbed in the chest by Omega Wolverine, the futuristic version of the character who traveled back in time specifically to stop her from betraying the mutants. While her healing powers may have been taken away from her and death seems imminent, MacTaggert isn’t down for the count just yet. At the end of the issue, MacTaggert rises from a literal grave with a new, cybernetic body and perhaps more hatred in her heart toward the X-Men than she’s ever felt.

In past X Deaths of Wolverine issues, MacTaggert enlisted the help of Arnab Chakladar, a human scientist and technology mogul, for various projects. Dealing with stage four cancer, X Deaths of Wolverine has also seen MacTaggert struggle with the topic of immortality as she’s searched for a way to permanently cheat death. Her resurrection into a new android-like body — which at least somewhat represents a Sentinel, the mutant-hunting robots that first appeared in 1965’s X-Men #14 — suggests that MacTaggert’s mission to achieve eternal life may finally have been successful.

That doesn’t mean she’s worked out her issues with the X-Men, though, as the reborn MacTaggert now poses as a Thanos-level threat to Krakoa. Upon her return, MacTaggert tells herself that she’s “more than a body now” and is rather “an intelligence.” She also hints at further treachery she plans to commit, as she “hopes [mutantkind is] looking forward to my swan song.

X Deaths of Wolverine #5 marks the end of the X Lives of Wolverine and X Deaths of Wolverine storyline, which ran parallel to one another while ushering in a new future for the X-Men known as the Second Krakoan Age. While the Omega Wolverine’s body is scrubbed of any Phalanx and then absorbed into the island after he’s defeated, more and more foes like MacTaggert and Sabertooth are starting to emerge on the island. The characters are also about to get wrapped up in Marvel’s Judgment Day event, which could only bring more harm and danger to Krakoa.
