A ‘Head of the Class’ reboot (really?) with Robin Givens and a new ‘Nordic noir’ from Netflix: Here’s what’s streaming for Canadians this week

With so many different streaming platforms and cable offerings to navigate through, choosing What To Watch has never been harder. To make things easier, here are our best tune-in tips for the week ahead.

TUESDAY NOVEMBER 2

Undercover Underage

With a countless number of adults still using the internet to groom and abuse children online, this new series features a 38-year-old mother of three posing as a teenage decoy to identify perpetrators. Roo Powell collaborates with law enforcement in this new spin on “To Catch a Predator” with Chris Hansen.

WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 3

The Harder They Fall

Although you will be streaming this brilliant revenge Western movie, “The Harder They Fall” will make you want to go back to the theatre. The story can best be described as a cross between “Kill Bill” and “The Untouchables.” Jonathan Majors plays protagonist Nat Love who has a serious issue with notorious outlaw Rufus Black (played by Idris Elba). Be warned that it is very violent.

THURSDAY NOVEMBER 4

Space Titans: Musk, Bezos, Branson

2021 will likely be remembered as the year when billionaires broke through the NASA glass ceiling and went to space on their own. That’s what this latest Discovery Plus series attempts to capture. Washington Post staff writer Christian Davenport gains unprecedented access to the biggest names in this new wave of exploration including elusive SpaceX Founder Elon Musk.

"Head of the Class" is a reboot of the 80's sitcom.

Head of the Class

School is back in session. Don’t miss #HeadoftheClassMax, a story about a group of overachieving high school students and their teacher, who wants to help them let loose.

What do we have here? Another reboot. Yes, it appears nothing is safe from a millennial makeover as even an understated 80s sitcom can be launched again. Inspired by the original series, this version of “Head of the Class,” once again revolves around overachieving high school students with a teacher who urges them to experience life instead of just concentrating on their grades. The coolest part of the show is seeing Robin Givens reprise her role as Darlene Merriman from the original series.

FRIDAY NOVEMBER 5

The Morning Show

Jennifer Aniston, Billy Crudup and Reese Witherspoon in "The Morning Show" on Apple TV Plus.

Did the character who appeared to die in the last episode actually die? That’s what “The Morning Show” team and fans of the show have been wondering for the past week. The wait is over as Friday’s new episode will quite literally answer the question as its “Confirmations” episode title suggests. One of the best programs currently streaming, Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Steve Carell and Billy Crudup deliver credible character performances every week and this episode sets the stage for the show’s season finale later this month.

The Electrical Life of Louis Wain

The extraordinary true story of eccentric British artist Louis Wain (Benedict Cumberbatch), whose playful, sometimes even psychedelic pictures helped to transform the public’s perception of cats forever. Moving from the late 1800s through to the 1930s, we follow the incredible adventures of this inspiring, unsung hero, as he seeks to unlock the “electrical” mysteries of the world and, in so doing, to better understand his own life and the profound love he shared with his wife Emily Richardson (Claire Foy). The Electrical Life of Louis Wain arrives to US theaters October 22 and Prime Video US on November 5.

This biopic about eccentric artist Louis Wain is so whimsical, the film actually needs the title card advising that it is a true story. The painter whose cat depictions put him in the public eye is portrayed wonderfully by Benedict Cumberbatch in this film that premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival.

A Man Named Scott

The Unlikely Murderer

Netflix seems to have found a niche in “Nordic noir,” by already importing great Scandinavian crime dramas like “The Rain” and “The Chestnut Man.” Its latest is the story of a man who witnessed the assassination of Sweden’s Prime Minister Olof Palme. The twist? The witness might have been the one who did it.

SATURDAY NOVEMBER 6

Arcane

It only makes sense for an animated series to drop on a Saturday and that’s exactly what Netflix has decided to do with a show that gamers around the world have been waiting for. Set in the popular online world of “League of Legends,” the founders of the franchise say that the show gives fans a better understanding of the characters that they love.

SUNDAY NOVEMBER 7

Dexter: New Blood

Are you ready for Dexter’s return? Set 10 years after Dexter went missing in the eye of Hurricane Laura, DEXTER: NEW BLOOD finds him living under an assumed name in the fictional small town of Iron Lake, New York. Dexter may be embracing his new life, but in the wake of unexpected events in this close-knit community, his Dark Passenger inevitably beckons. Starring Michael C. Hall. Don’t miss the premiere of DEXTER: NEW BLOOD, available to stream on Sunday, November 7th and airing at 9 p.m. ET/PT on SHOWTIME.

It’s ironic that the top pick of the week is the return of a show that many believe had the worst series finale of all time back in 2013. With the resurrection of our favourite serial killer, the writers of the original series have basically admitted that they want another chance at giving Dexter the send-off he deserves (although given that he kills people, what he deserves is open to interpretation). The 10-episode revival will take place ten years after Dexter went missing in the eye of Hurricane Laura.
