A DCEU Fan Favorite is Trying to Solve a Multiversal Mystery

A fan-favorite anti-hero from The Suicide Squad is on their way toward uncovering some vital multiversal information.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Suicide Squad #14, now on sale from DC Comics

The DC Universe is approaching one of its most potentially explosive stories ever with the coming Dark Crisis. The event threatens to envelop the entirety of creation across the multiverse into the Great Darkness. However, it turns out a surprising figure might play a pivotal role in fighting back against that danger.

Suicide Squad #14 by Dennis Hopeless, Eduardo Pansica, Julio Ferreira, Dexter Soy, Jeremiah Skipper, Peter Pantazis, and Wes Abbott reveals that Bloodsport is doing his best to map the multiverse — and the recent DC Extended Universe hero might be dragging himself and his team into a far more important storyline as a result.

In the aftermath of the War for Earth-3, the Suicide Squad has found themselves surprisingly adrift. While Rick Flagg struggles to keep his volatile team under control, he’s forced to admit that he can’t send Bloodsport into the field in his current condition: while Bloodsport hasn’t been injured in the line of duty, his current responsibilities have consumed his attention. As part of a deal with Waller during the conflict, the various variants of Bloodsport’s deceased brother ended up dropping onto the core-DC Universe. But within six weeks, Bloodsport is already exhausted of them. He’s considered out of commission by Flagg while he continues his investigation into the multiverse.

It turns out Bloodsport has been actually mapping out the various realities that exist, hoping to find a means to return the variants of his brothers to their home realities. This has seemingly pushed the already stressed-out mercenary to a breaking point, especially as his brothers live with him and leave him constantly surrounded and needed. It’s an interesting place to see Bloodsport, especially in the wake of his DCEU equivalent’s starring role in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. The formerly minor villain has gotten a larger showcase than ever thanks to his appearance in the film, and his prevalence in the current Suicide Squad comics has risen accordingly. Now, it seems that Bloodsport is committed to cracking a multiversal mystery, helping determine where and how to reach all of these other realities.

That means that Bloodsport has quietly been doing potentially crucial work. The multiverse is currently in a great deal of danger thanks to the machinations of Pariah and the Great Darkness. Entire realities are being threatened, and the coming problems might be impossible for the heroes to solve without taking the battle to a genuinely epic scale. Justice League Incarnate is set to bring the Justice League into the conflict — with the event teased to result in the deaths of nearly the entire Justice League. But Bloodsport’s work in mapping the multiverse could provide the heroes with the means of reaching other realities and even rallying armies of countless worlds to their side.

Bloodsport’s mission might feel minor compared to the true stakes of the coming Dark Crisis, but his attempts to send his brother’s variants home might end up giving his world a major advantage in the coming events. By trying to crack a multiversal mystery, Bloodsport may have made himself (and by extension the new chaotic version of the Suicide Squad) far more important to the future of the DC Universe than anyone realizes. Considering the Squad’s next mission will seemingly involve trying to kidnap Lex Luthor, the Squad’s secret moves might even come to the attention of the Totality — setting up the secret team to further utilize Bloodsport and his discoveries.
