A Dark DC Hero Has Stolen a Major JSA Member’s Power Source
Catwoman, Riddler and Poison Ivy steal a JSA’s power source and hand it off to a dark DC hero in the latest issue of Catwoman: Lonely City.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Catwoman: Lonely City #3, on sale now from DC.
Jason Blood, also known as Etrigan the Demon’s human form, gets his hands on Doctor Fate’s powerful helmet in the DC Black Label’s Catwoman: Lonely City #3.
Catwoman: Lonely City #3 comes from writer/artist/colorist/letterer/cover artist Cliff Chiang, with variant cover art by Annie Wu. In the book, Catwoman, Poison Ivy and the Riddler break into a museum to steal what Riddler calls a “burial mask,” though he alludes there’s more to it than that. After they successfully do so, they bring the artifact to Jason Blood to see if he’s interested in taking it from them. Blood is initially uninterested in the offer; however, Riddler takes out a sledgehammer and breaks the statue, revealing it to be the Helmet of Nabu.
What Blood intends to do with the Helmet of Nabu, also known as the Helmet of Fate, isn’t immediately clear; although, Blood does note, “In the wrong hands, this could bring about armageddon…thank you for delivering it to me.” The parties then part ways, but Blood appears again later to assist Selina and Poison Ivy in breaking into the Batcave. Catwoman: Lonely City #3 ends with Blood summoning Etrigan the Demon, who is less than pleased to have been locked away in Blood’s body for so long.
The Helmet of Fate first appeared in 1940’s More Fun Comics #55 and was created by Gardner Fox and Howard Sherman. Forged by the Lord Order of Nabu, the helmet is one of the items — along with the Amulet of Anubis and the Cloak of Destiny — that gives its wearer the powers of Doctor Fate. The helmet has fallen into others’ hands before, such as when John Constantine wears it for a time in 2014’s Constantine: Future’s End by Ray Fawkes, Juan Ferreyra, Tanya Horie, Richard Horie and Pat Brosseau.
Jason Blood/Etrigan the Demon was created by Jack Kirby and first appeared in 1972’s The Demon #1. The Blood character is typically depicted as an expert on all things demonology, partially because Etrigan the Demon is bonded to him for all eternity. Having two minds and souls inside of his body briefly drove Blood insane for a time; however, he’s since learned how to have some control over the malicious entity living inside of him.
Catwoman: Lonely City #3 is on sale now from DC. The next and final issue of the DC Black Label series goes on sale in August.
