Kate Garraway’s husband suffered health ‘drama’ days before MBE appearance
Speaking shortly after receiving her MBE on Wednesday, Kate Garraway shared her unbridled excitement that her husband, Derek Draper, was able to join her at Windsor Castle.
Pictures showed Derek beaming from a wheelchair as he watched his wife receive the honour from Prince William.
Kate shared: “Then we had a bit of a drama the last 10 days and I thought ‘oh gosh’, but he is here.”
In awe, the 56-year-old added that it was “unbelievable” that Derek had been able to sit upright in his wheelchair, adding that it “helped” he could tilt backwards in it and gushed: “Everyone inside has been so amazing and made it possible.”
She also revealed that Derek and the Prince of Wales had an emotional moment together as she received her honour.
In that moment, Prince William asked how Derek was, as Kate continued: “I said; ‘Well he’s here’, and then they looked at each other and Derek burst into tears.”
The Good Morning Britain star received an MBE for her services to broadcasting, journalism and charity.
As Derek appeared in a dapper blue suit, Kate donned a gorgeous maxi dress, with a belt cinching her waist and delicate pearl details around her neck and wrists as well as a matching fascinator.
She was also joined by her parents, Gordon and Marilyn, with her trio of supporters beaming with pride as they posed for photographs outside of the castle.
The couple’s heartwarming display of support is one of Derek’s first public appearances amid his continuing health woes.
The pair, who have been married for 18 years, both contracted Covid at the very start of the pandemic in 2020.
While the Good Morning Britain presenter had a speedy recovery, Derek’s illness only worsened.
The 55-year-old was ultimately placed in an induced coma in hospital to help his body combat the virus and only returned home in 2021, after having lost most of his muscles due to being in the coma and hospital bed for so long.
The author’s gruelling ordeal saw him become the longest-surviving hospital patient with Covid in the UK.
The broadcaster has kept her fans duly updated with Derek’s condition and even won a National Television Award for her documentary Kate Garraway: Finding Derek.
