Man Utd facing accusations of ‘disrespecting’ De Gea as contract winds down
Manchester United fans are rallying behind David De Gea on social media. The Spain international is currently poised to leave the club on Friday as things stand. And while he may yet pen a new deal at Old Trafford, that now looks increasingly unlikely to happen.
De Gea joined United from Atletico Madrid on this day back in 2011, back when Sir Alex Ferguson was manager.
And he’s become a club legend at Old Trafford ever since, establishing himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the Red Devils’ entire history.
While that’s the case, however, De Gea’s time at United now seems to be drawing to a close.
Barring a late twist he’ll become a free agent on Friday, bringing his time at the club to an end.
And many United fans on social media feel De Gea has been disrespected, especially as he may now not get a chance to say goodbye to supporters at home.
“De Gea is a club legend and I will always have respect for him,” said @SimonUtdV2.
“Servant of the club who didn’t deserve the disrespect this club as giving him.
“This club literally has been treating legends poorly recently just shows how out of touch and unorganized (sic) this club is.”
User @AnthonyOno247 said: “Keeping or selling David De Gea
@ManUtd should not disrespect him for no reason.
“He practically gave the club everything. 12 years is no joke.”
“The disrespect is insane. De Gea should find a club that will actually appreciate him,” stated @BHibburd.
User @I_am_Fred1 said: “De Gea doesn’t deserve this disrespect.”
@Deci_studios weighed in by saying: “Regardless what you think, the disrespect the club has shown to De gea (sic) is disgusting.”
And @J4rffy said: “The De Gea disrespect is too much. Gave his all for the club.
“I know we need a better goalkeeper but he did save us at our lowest!”
De Gea has made more appearances for United than any other goalkeeper.
He’s also kept the most clean sheets, too, while also claiming two Golden Glove awards during his time at the cub.
And what ultimately happens as his contract ticks down remains to be seen.
Meanwhile, speaking recently, Dimitar Berbatov opened up on who should replace De Gea in the event of any potential exit.
And he mentioned Andre Onana and Mike Maignan, of Inter Milan and AC Milan respectively, as being perfect upgrades.
“If David de Gea was to leave this summer, then I’d like them to sign either Andre Onana or AC Milan’s Mike Maignan,” said the Bulgarian.
“These two goalkeepers are unbelievable and Onana impressed everybody who was watching the Champions League final in regards to his composure on the ball and his passing ability.
“They will have to see what his availability’s like and as he impressed me so much, I would hope that Manchester United enquire about him.”
