With the cost of energy still high, any opportunity to save money on electricity bills will be welcomed by households.

Now, British Gas has announced the return of a PeakSave scheme that might help people do just that, by encouraging customers not to use the electricity grid during periods of high demand over the summer.

The managing director of British Gas Energy, Catherine O’Kelly, has said: ‘The electricity grid continues to face enormous pressures and we recognise the need to better manage periods of peak demand to ensure a safe, constant and more sustainable supply across the UK.’

Mrs O’Kelly said British Gas has ‘gained valuable insight’ into how they can control periods of high demand through the scheme’s launch last year.

The British Gas MD went on to say: ‘We want to increase the number of customers who have signed up to the scheme so we can understand its true potential and achieve a greener and more controlled grid.’

So what is the PeakSave scheme, and how can you apply it?

Here is what you need to know.

What is British Gas PeakSave, and how does it work?

In order to encourage customers to use energy outside of peak times, customers will get 50% off each unit of electricity used between 11am and 4pm on Sundays over the summer.

The scheme is set to run from this Sunday, June 25, to September 24, 2023, with British Gas claiming the plan will save typical-use households around £29.25 over the course of the summer.

While you’ll be billed as usual, half of what you spent will be credited back to your account after around two weeks.

It’s important to note that the discount only applies to the first 60 units (kWh) of electricity that you use, meaning anything over that will be charged at your usual rate (as will your standing charge)
