NVIDIA DLSS 3 Plugin Now Available for Unreal Engine 5.2

The NVIDIA DLSS 3 plugin for Unreal Engine 5.2 is now publically available for download. The plugin includes DLSS Frame Generation, DLSS Super Resolution, Reflex, Deep Learning Anti-Aliasing (DLAA), and NVIDIA Image Scaling (NIS).

Do note that the NVIDIA DLSS 3 plugin only enables Frame Generation when using Unreal Engine 5.2. To use Frame Generation with earlier Unreal Engine versions, such as 5.1, 5.0, or 4.27, you will need to download the source code for those versions and modify it with a small patch. More information about this process is included in the Quick Start PDF file included with the DLSS 3 plugin.

Nick Penwarden, Vice President of Engineering at Epic Games, stated:

NVIDIA DLSS 3 introduces truly impressive frame generation technology and the Unreal Engine 5.2 plugin will offer developers a great choice for increased quality and performance of their games.

DLSS Frame Generation compatibility will vary depending on the Unreal Engine modes as detailed below:

  • Selected Viewport (main Editor window)
    • DLSS Frame Generation is not supported
    • Blueprint logic reports FG as supported which is helpful when developing UI + Blueprint, however enabling FG will not actually run it
  • New Editor Windows – Play In Editor (PIE)
    • DLSS Frame Generation is partially supported
    • Possibly with reduced image quality since some of the additional input buffers to DLSS Frame Generation are not available in this PIE mode.
    • Blueprint logic reports Frame Generation as supported which is helpful to develop UI + Blueprints
  • Standalone Game
    • DLSS Frame Generation is supported
    • Same support as a packaged build

To verify that the NVIDIA DLSS 3 plugin is correctly running Frame Generation in your Unreal Engine 5.2, enable the Load Debut Overlay option in Project Settings\NVIDIA Streamline plugin preferences. In the same settings tab, users can activate the Allow OTA Update option to let DLSS AI algorithms be updated over-the-air.

The NVIDIA DLSS 3 plugin includes a newer version of Reflex, so NVIDIA recommends disabling the older one available directly in Unreal Engine. Moreover, the NVIDIA DLSS 3 plugin can cause problems with VSYNC, so users should disable it in their application through the specific console command.

The public availability of NVIDIA DLSS 3 plugin for Unreal Engine 5.2 should increase the ease of integration for game developers. For more information on how to set up everything, check out this Inside Unreal live stream.

In other Deep Learning Super Sampling news, DLSS 2 is included in Trepang 2 (out today), Warhaven’s Steam Next Fest demo (the full game will support DLSS 3), and Forever Skies (out tomorrow on Steam Early Access).
