Former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) governor and renowned economist Raghuram Rajan was at the centre of a furious debate on Monday for his comments related to India on the path to being a superpower.

Responding to a question on his potential role as India’s finance minister or prime minister in the coming decade, Rajan expressed his indifference towards India attaining superpower status.

He noted that his focus lies on fulfilling the aspirations of every Indian, in alignment with the vision of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi.

“Why do I keep talking about India? Lots of people want me to stop talking about India. The reason I talk about India is that I really feel we are at a crossroads. We do have choices to make. I don’t care about India being a superpower, to me that’s not the point. It’s about what the father of the nation wanted. You make every Indian happy. How do I do that? That should be our focus,” Rajan said.

Rajan’s comment has not gone down well with netizens who accused him of disregarding the welfare of millions of Indians.

“Being a superpower means lesser poverty, healthier lives, longer life spans, less suffering for a Billion people but of course Rajan doesn’t care about all that, all he cares is if he can be the next Manmohan Singh for Gandhi family,” a Twitter user said.

“Indian liberal elites are the most despicable sadists on earth, willing to sacrifice millions of people’s well-being in order to gain even the slightest amount of power,” he added.

“The way Raghuram Rajan is speaking, it looks more like a reply by Rahul Gandhi than an economist,” another said.
