Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Swings to a $120.5 Million Domestic Weekend Box Office Victory

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has swung to an amazing $120.5 million domestic weekend box office victory. In addition, Miles’ latest multiversal adventure has reached $208.6 million worldwide and set the record for Sony Pictures’ biggest animated opening of all-time.

As reported by Comscore, Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse’s $120 million North American performance was also more than triple the $35 million Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse opened to in 2018.

Domestically, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse passed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’s $114 opening to earn the second place spot on the list of 2023 opening weekends, and now it sits just behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s $137 million opening.

In our Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse review, we said, “Miles and Gwen’s search for their place in the multiverse is relentless and exciting, almost to a fault, and though the plot is often an afterthought to the pure chaos of creation on display, strong performances and character arcs that feel true to the heroes we met last time help ensure that Across the Spider-Verse is a more-than-worthy follow-up to an all-time classic.”

The Little Mermaid swam to a $40.6 million second-place second weekend, and that helped bring its North American total to $186.2 million. Globally, The Little Mermaid’s box office total has passed $32.6 million.

Disney had another top-five finish with 20th Century Studios’ The Boogeyman, which earned $12.3 million in its domestic debut as an adaptation of a short story from Stephen King from 1973.

In our The Boogeyman review, we said it “is a capable creepshow built for mass appeal that gets the job done, preying upon our childhood fears of the dark for some massive jump-scare frights.”

Disney wasn’t content with just two films in the top five and instead thought it’d be a great idea to have Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 place fourth with a $10.2 million performance in its fifth weekend in theaters. The third Guardians film has reached $322.71 million domestically and $780.1 million globally.

Fast X rounded out the top five with estimated earnings of $9.24 million in North America. Fast X’s domestic total has raced past $128 million in North America and globally it’s now sitting at $603.2 million.
