Netflix fans find another way to get around account sharing ban using free app
NETFLIX fans think they may have stumbled across another way to get around the account sharing ban – and it’s free.
Last week, the streaming giant banned viewers who don’t live under the same roof as the primary account holder from streaming content – which has left some customers vowing to quit.
Of course, it was only a matter of time before tech savvy users discovered a way to continue watching Netflix without paying up.
Under the new rules, Netflix charges users wanting to share an account £4.99 per month, which costs the same as having your own ad-based subscription.
But viewers aren’t particularly happy with the deal, especially those getting a subscription through a third-party like Sky, Virgin or BT.
Account sharers have already devised two ways to workaround the new Netflix regime.
Now, there’s one more.
However, it should be noted that any tricks to continue sharing are against Netflix rules and could see you blocked from the platform.
It’s also possible the streaming giant might swoop in and squash the workaround before it gets too popular.
Virtual private network
Netflix tracks its users IP addresses (as well as device IDs and account activity) to determine whether viewers are in the same household or not.
But a VPN, also known as a virtual private network, can be used to mask IP addresses for cybersecurity purposes.
These types of networks were previously used by Netflix viewers to gain access to content available in other countries – something Netflix has since put a stop to.
Despite Netflix’s work against VPNs, cybersecurity company NordVPN claims to have a solution with its Meshnet product.
NordVPN Meshnet lets users create a mesh network where up to 60 devices can be connected to the same Wi-Fi at the same time – even though you’re not.
So it tricks sites like Netflix into thinking you’re all at the same location and won’t block you.
Meshnet essentially solves the problem of needing different devices to be at one location to have the same Wi-Fi coverage and IP address.
The feature is completely free too, even if you don’t pay for a NordVPN plan.
