TWO Scottish islands have been named among the world’s best hidden gems.

Research conducted by holiday rental marketplace HomeToGo said searches for high season island stays have soared in recent years.

And the Isles of Bute and Barra were listed in the top ten worldwide destinations for travellers to visit in 2023.

Their list hopes to help travellers seeking to escape the droves of tourists in hotspots to find serenity in hidden gems.

The Scottish islands appeared alongside destinations in the Bahamas, Philippines, French Polynesia, Portugal, Australia, France, US, Netherlands, Canada and Italy.

The Isle of Barra known for its sandy shores and beauty. The small island also has one of the most unique airports in the world as the flights land on the beach at Cockle Strand. It is also accessible by ferry from Oban.

In the Firth of Clyde, the Isle of Bute, which is divided into highland and lowland areas is popular for walking, cycling and fishing.

Demand for stays on the UK’s Isle of Scilly and Isle of Wight have more than tripled it found.

While, popular Greek island Paxos and Spanish island Mallorca have seen year-on-year increases in search of +180% and +237% respectively.

The list aims to help travellers seeking hidden gems and serenity to discover alternative holiday destinations.

The index features a total of 20 islands which are ranked according to four indicators including low traveller demand, their standing as a local secret and lack of social media hype.
