Dr Amir Khan shares how often to wash your hair to prevent hair loss
From eating a lack of protein to intensive hair styling, there could be various triggers for hair loss.
However, certain warning signs could be pointing to abnormal hair shedding, according to Dr Amir Khan.
Speaking on ITV’s show Lorraine, the doctor said: “We have about 100,000 hairs on our head and we lose between 50 and 100 hairs daily naturally.
“There’s natural regrowth so we don’t tend to notice that but for some people hair loss can be really stressful.
“The symptoms and signs to look out for [include], particularly, things like receding hairlines, widening parting, bald patches… itching, inflamed scalp.

“All of those things could be indicating that you are losing more hair than it’s normal.”
There are many potential causes of hair loss, with hormones playing a big part in this process.
While some risk factors might be difficult to influence, others can be easily switched up.
Interestingly, Dr Amir has shared the number of times you wash your hair could also be important.
He said: “There are simple things that we can all do – think about the number of times you are washing your hair.
“You shouldn’t be doing it more than once a day. Washing your hair strips it of its natural oils which are protective.
“Experts actually say, ‘You shouldn’t be washing your hair more than two or three times a week’.”
Another important factor when it comes to washing your hair is the temperature of the water.
You might have heard about the fad that hails washing your hair in cold water to achieve an impeccable shine.
However, the TV doctor recommended against any extreme temperatures.
He added: “Avoid very hot and very cold water. They are both damaging to hair and can again strip the hair and weaken it.”
Last but not least, your hair care shouldn’t include too much heat or heavy chemicals.
“Limit the amount of times you blow dry your hair, you straighten your hair, or use very severe chemicals on your hair,” Dr Amir said.
