Liverpool season ratings as four players get 2/10s or lower as Cody Gakpo shines
Liverpool have endured a campaign to forget after failing to qualify for the Champions League for the first time sine Jurgen Klopp’s first season at Anfield in 2015/16. So how did their players rate over the course of the past nine months? Express Sport has you covered.
Alisson – 8
It’s been a phenomenal season for the Brazilian goalkeeper, who is one of only a few Liverpool players that can hold his head high. Won his side plenty of points.
Caoimhin Kelleher – 6
Will be frustrated with his lack of game time, particularly due to early exits in both the League Cup and FA Cup.
Calvin Ramsay – 2
Made just two appearances in the first-team this season due to injuries. Can only get better.
Trent Alexander-Arnold – 7
Had his defensive struggles but he looks a player reborn in his new central role. Was integral to Liverpool’s late nine-match unbeaten run.
Virgil van Dijk – 6
Not the best by his standards, struggled at times but did also play his part in Liverpool’s resurgence.
Ibrahima Konate – 7
Big year for the big centre-back, who has now established himself as Jurgen Klopp’s preferred defensive partner for Virgil van Dijk.
Joel Matip – 6
Chipped in with a few important goals including the headed winner at West Ham but has looked shaky at times and may move on this summer.
Joe Gomez – 2
Really poor besides marking Erling Haaland out of the game in Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Man City at Anfield. Was ripped apart by Real Madrid and destroyed for Kaoru Mitoma’s stoppage-time winner for Brighton in the FA Cup.
Nat Phillips – 2
Hard to fault his effort but after failing to land a transfer last summer, Phillips played just four times in all competitions.
Andy Robertson – 5
Mediocre season in comparison to what he has served up in previous time. Gave his all and attitude cannot be questioned.
Kostas Tsimikas – 3
Opportunities were limited as expected but even when he featured he failed to leave a lasting impression.
Fabinho – 5
Was very, very shaky during the height of Liverpool’s struggles but deserves credit for the way he responded during the final 10 matches of the season.
James Milner – 6
Not the way he will want to sign off having failed to win silverware but turned in some very credible contributions over the course of the campaign.
Stefan Bajcetic – 7
Was making a case for Liverpool’s Player of the Year award prior to his season-ending injury but superb breakthrough campaign from the Spaniard.
Naby Keita – 1
Injury-prone and much like the majority of his Anfield career, ridiculously disappointing.
Thiago Alcantara – 4
Moments of magic but struggled to stay fit. Liverpool need more from their midfield technician, who can’t seem to enjoy a run of games without picking up knocks and niggles.
Jordan Henderson – 6
Will feel frustrated he couldn’t replicate his World Cup form upon return to Anfield but still led by example.
Arthur Melo – N/A
Just utterly disastrous due to various injury problems. Made one appearance all season from the bench.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – 3
Disappointing final season at Anfield as he prepares to depart. Hasn’t played enough and when he has, he has failed to seize his opportunity.
Curtis Jones – 7
Excellent during the run-in and that was reflected in the fact Jurgen Klopp continued to pick him ahead of others.
Harvey Elliott – 6
A few very bright performances most notably against Manchester United in the 7-0 drubbing but still lacks consistency.
Fabio Carvalho – 3
Played under 10 minutes of action in the second half of the Premier League after such a bright start, needs to play more if he isn’t sold or loaned.
Cody Gakpo – 8
Really positive start to life in the Premier League from the Dutchman netting seven goals and registering two assists following his January transfer from PSV.
Luis Diaz – 4
Frustrating on the basis of his injury set-backs after missing most of the season but still delivered a few memorable performances.
Darwin Nunez – 4
More to come from the £85million frontman, who was wasteful in front of goal and struggled to settle in one position on his debut season in English football.
Diogo Jota – 6
Finished the season strongly with a total of seven goals but missed large chunks of the campaign with a calf injury.
Roberto Firmino – 7
Firmino’s numbers are very respectable – 11 goals in 25 Premier League games – considering he suffered with injury on his farewell season at Anfield. He started the campaign very brightly.
Mohamed Salah – 8
Not his best season supposedly but he still mustered 19 goals and 12 assists in the Premier League and 30 goals in all competitions.
