Mets’ Pete Alonso hit first-pitch homer because he had to poop: ‘Straight to the bathroom’

Turns out, there was an ulterior motive behind Pete Alonso’s second-inning home run off Hunter Greene a few weeks ago.

In an appearance on Foul Territory, Alonso explained that his goal was merely to get back to the dugout and use the bathroom as quick as possible — which ended up having a good result.

“I mistimed my pregame coffee. Mistimed it. I had it too close to game time,” Alonso said. “And then I’m running, doing my sprints and then I throw in the middle of the first inning, I’m like goodness gracious, this is not good.

“So I was hitting the top of the second, I was leading off the inning. I said I don’t care where this pitch is, this at-bat is ending first pitch. Because I need to go.”

Luckily for Alonso, the first pitch was something hittable, and he ended up tying the game at one after the Reds had scored in the bottom half of the first.

The Mets went on to win the game 2-1 on May 10, making the homer a vital moment in the victory.

“As soon as I touch home plate, it was straight to the bathroom,” Alonso said. “No high fives, straight to the bathroom.

“… That was best-case but dude, honestly, if I had to run the bases, honestly I would’ve gotten picked off on purpose or something. I would’ve had to go so bad.”

The Mets, of course, will happily take it.

Alonso has been on a red-hot pace to start the season, leading baseball with 19 home runs and 45 RBIs going into Saturday’s games.

He is on pace for 59 home runs this season.

That specific home run was Alonso’s second straight day hitting one into the seats — and he’s added six more to his total since then, with the Mets having started to win at a higher clip following a poor start to the season.

So, not to say Alonso’s need to use the bathroom sparked the Mets’ turnaround.

But you can do the math.
