The Cinque Terre, a group of five towns along the Italian Riviera, inspired the landscapes and settings in the hit Disney film Luca.

Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore were the inspiration behind the fictional town of Portorosso in the film.

From the pebbled beaches and the cobbled streets to the luxurious waters, it’s easy to see the resemblance between fact and fiction.

This is because the film’s director, Enrico Casarosa, grew up in the region and drew inspiration from his childhood visits to the Italian coast.

For anyone who wants to be part of the Disney magic, the easiest way to reach the Cinque Terre is via Genoa – the region’s capital city.

Both Ryanair and British Airways operate direct routes to Genoa, and flights cost £21 for a one-way ticket.

The town of Vernazza is a 90-minute drive away from Genoa, but the site can also be reached via a train from Genoa to Vernazza.

We’ve found return train tickets for £20 for a full-paying adult.

Many holidaymakers flock to the five towns for a day trip from nearby cities like La Spezia or Pisa.

The five towns are well-connected by a local train network and are only a few minutes apart from one another.

If you can only spend a day visiting the five towns, then it’s best to buy the Cinque Terre Train Card.

The ticket costs €18.20 (£15.80) for a full-paying adult, and passengers can board several services throughout the day.

For holidaymakers with a bit more time, then it’s also possible to walk the coastal path between the five towns.

While a section of the hike is free, holidaymakers will need to purchase the Cinque Terre Trekking Card for €7.50 (£6.52).

As well as walking between the five towns, visitors are also encouraged to swim and sunbathe at one of the many beaches dotted along the coast.

Fegina Beach in Monterosso is arguably the best beach among the five towns.

Bright orange parasols and sunloungers can be rented for around £20 per person.

Alternatively, there are also several public beaches a 10-minute walk away too.

Other activities include pesto-making classes and sunset boat tours around the five towns.

But for anyone who wants to spend several days in the Cinque Terre, then you’ll be pleased to know there is a range of accommodation options available including hotels and hostels.
