Harry Potter Quidditch Champions closed beta has started and so have the leaks

A lucky few have already been able to play new game Quidditch Champions and predictably that’s led to footage being shared online.

Closed betas are essential for testing out how a multiplayer game works with ordinary members of the public, but the problem is you can guarantee that at least one person will ignore the NDA (non-disclosure agreement) and post footage when they’ve been specifically told not to.

That’s exactly what’s happened with Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions and while we can’t show it here for legal reasons it’s now very easy to find lengthy sections of gameplay footage circulating around the internet.

Although the game was announced last month the details were so vague it wasn’t clear whether it was an AAA release or some quick cash-in, especially as Quidditch is conspicuous by its absence in Hogwarts Legacy.

It’s still not clear exactly what formats it’s coming out on – PC and consoles is the only thing that’s been said so far – but the good news is the footage does look promising.

Rather than being a cash grab the gameplay seems to be surprisingly complicated, which it needs to be given Quidditch’s rather involved (some might say nonsensical) rules.

Rocket League is the obvious point of comparison, when watching the footage, which makes a lot of sense when you think about it.

Whether Quidditch Champions will also be free-to-play is currently unknown, but it certainly wouldn’t be a surprise if it turned out to be a live service title.

There’s also a lot of customisation options too, including appearance and gender, goal celebrations, and the magical trail coming from your broom. You can play as famous characters too, including Harry Potter – or at least use their appearance as the starting point for your own character.

The developer is Unbroken Studio, who are new but include veterans from the Battlefield, Call Of Duty, God Of War, and the Batman: Arkham series.

The only official footage is from a short clip used as the backdrop for the website. Warner Bros. Italy is the only one to have released it online but while it’s all pre-rendered it does give an indication of the art style and tone they’re going for.
