Stefanos Tsitsipas tries to kick mum out of Italian Open match as tensions boil
Stefanos Tsitsipas’ mum was seen leaving his player box at the Italian Open as commentators reported that he asked her to leave the stadium. The Greek star lost the opening set of his semi-final to Daniil Medvedev after multiple rain delays that lasted several hours. And he was heard telling his dad that he wanted his mother to leave.
Tsitsipas and Medvedev found themselves at the centre of a lengthy semi-final as a result of the rain. The pair were forced to suspend their match at 4-4 in the first set and didn’t resume play for almost three hours.
They played just one game before another suspension and finally returned almost two hours later. It was Medvedev who pounced at the second resumption as Tsitsipas was broken from 40-0 on his serve and the third seed finally took the first set 7-5.
The 24-year-old was heard chattering away to his box, and his mum Julia could be seen walking up the stairs in the stadium and taking a random seat in the stands. “Tsitsipas I’m told was actually telling his mum not to talk in Russian at the sit-down so that Medvedev of course doesn’t hear it,” Nick Lester said on Prime Video.
“That’s what I’m told was the message at the change of ends, she’s moved up. Musical chairs up there,” he added. Lester then updated fans in the first game of the second set after learning that Tsitsipas wanted his mum to leave altogether.
“I’ve also just been told that he has told his dad that mum needs to leave the stadium,” he said. But having his mother leave his box didn’t seem to work, as the 27-year-old was able to start the second set by breaking the Tsitsipas serve.
Tsitsipas was able to get on the board in the second set with a love hold as his mum watched on from her new seat in the stands. And he was able to break to saw level at 3-3.
