Cubs’ Cody Bellinger exits game early after making incredible leaping catch
Cody Bellinger paid a price for a sensational leaping catch.
The Cubs center fielder ran down a drive to the fence in right-center by the Astros’ Kyle Tucker.
He went leaping into the wall to rob Tucker of at least a double and likely an RBI for the final out of the bottom of the seventh inning in Houston on Monday.
But Bellinger appeared to land awkwardly as he came down.
The structure has a fence on top and wall on the bottom, so it’s not a smooth descent off it.
Bellinger’s right leg came down a bit straight and looked like it buckled as he went tumbling to the ground.
He was pinch hit for by Miles James Mastrobuoni in the top of the eight.
“Doc checked him out — nothing major,” Cubs manager David Ross told reporters after the game. “We’ll see how he wakes up in the morning. He’s icing it now … but all the checks the doc did, ligaments and things seem to be OK.”
The Astros held on for a 6-4 victory.
The 34-year-old Bellinger, a former MVP, has so far made good on the Cubs taking a chance on him for one year, $12 million after six seasons with the Dodgers.
He is hitting .271 with seven homers, 20 RBIs, nine steals and an. 830 OPS this season with the Cubs sitting at 19-20.
It’s a good first step toward Bellinger righting his career after struggling mightily in his final two season in Los Angeles.
