Here’s three dangerous mistakes to avoid when it comes to where your cuppa-tea-facilitator lives, according to kitchenware maker Dualit.

Your kettle shouldn’t be situated in a tray – always place your kettle directly on your work top

A 21st Century kettle is unlikely to melt or damage a tray, be it wooden or plastic.

However, a tray might be easier to pull off the work surface by children or curious pets.

Even if the kitchen gadget isn’t filled with boiling or hot water, a kettle to the face or foot – or any body part – will likely hurt.

But, of course, there is also a risk of an even worse burn injury.

Kettles need ventilation, so don’t keep yours in a pantry or cupboard

Kettles under cupboards are safe, as long as the appliance isn’t faulty.

They’re also unlikely to cause fires or other heat-related nightmares.

But the steam that a kettle puffs out can damage your cupboard’s appearance.

Keeping your kettle beneath the cabinet might result in discoloured or weaker wood.

It will also make that space wet and warm – and what likes that kind of environment? Mould.

Mould is attracted to damp spaces, so keeping your kettle in a pantry or cupboard could become a health hazard over time.

Kettles should be kept a safe distance away from heat sources, such as the hob and away from water.

Burns, slips and injuries are all too common in the kitchen.

You can minimise your risk of injury in the kitchen by keeping your kettle away from another heat source – and water.

Electricity and water are a potentially fatal combination.

So it’s always best to keep your kettle a good distance away from the kitchen sink.
