Frank Lampard ‘would sign for Chelsea’ in defiant transfer message

Frank Lampard has claimed that he would still sign for Chelsea despite the Blues’ abysmal campaign. The west Londoners look set to finish in the bottom half of the Premier League and may end up needing to spend big again as they look to correct their huge list of problems.

Lampard has endured a terrible return to Stamford Bridge as caretaker manager winning his first game at the seventh time of asking after six consecutive losses. The Blues are set to have one of their worst seasons in the Premier League era with European football completely out of the question.

Chelsea’s dire form comes despite their extensive spending over both transfer windows since being taken over by Todd Boehly and the Clearlake Capital Group. The club spent over £500m on 13 new faces, the majority of which have failed to have any meaningful impact.

Ironically, the Blues will be forced back into the transfer window over the summer as they look to correct their many issues. Mauricio Pochettino is widely reported to be on the verge of becoming the club’s new manager on a permanent basis and it is likely he will want to be backed in order to put his own stamp on the club.

However, he may find players do not want to join him at Stamford Bridge given Chelsea’s dire season and lack of European football. Lampard has tried to downplay these suggestions though, insisting he would still jump at the chance to join the club if he was still a player.

“I would absolutely sign for Chelsea. I signed for Chelsea when we were a top six or eight team and little did I know but 13 years later when I left I would come out with medals and trophies all over the place because the club had moved forward.

“I saw it grow from that club to the most successful club in the modern era of the Premier League at that time. There are a lot of great things about this club. The old saying that form in temporary class is permanent is quite a good saying in football.

“This is always going to be a successful football club. I would say that obviously because of my connection to the club but I absolutely believe it.”

It remains to be seen whether or not any of Europe’s best players will feel the same as Chelsea approach an important summer.
