The importance of education
Education is not just something that should be forced upon us. I think it is important we recognise the privilege we have to feel as though education is simply a pointless intuition forced upon us by the government. Education is a pathway to opportunity, one not provided to many. The right to education, though sounding so simple, is huge and not recognised enough. How many times have you sat in a lesson and heard someone say “when am I ever going to need this in the real world?” and of course this question is arguable. Perhaps what we learn in certain aspects of education should be reworked for example ethics lessons but at its core, our education is vital to our growth. I speak from a world of privilege where I am able to attend a good school and can afford to continue education throughout university and therefore perhaps my views on the matter are pointless as they come from a world with accessibility. But it allows me to appreciate what I have.
It has been proven time and time again that higher education supports a higher quality of life in the future. In recent years we have seen an increasing number of vocational qualifications such as the new t-levels. When first produced these qualifications were seen as a way to give lower class students a better opportunity at higher education, however they are now seen by many as a way to trap these people into a cycle of poverty. Though Sunak’s approach of forcing maths till 18 for all is riddled with logistical issues, like finding and supporting teachers, the movement would support a higher level of education for all and perhaps create more accessibility for them in the future.
