City Day! – Somtoo Mefor, CLFS

The City day acts a celebration of Freemen’s students who are set to move on from the school – namely those in ‘Lower 4’ (Year 8) and ‘Upper Sixth’ (Year 13), providing them with an edifiying and enjoyable event in the country’s capital before exams and the culmination of the school year. The day began with the aformentioned service hosted at St Lawrence’s Jewry, in London; this feat was not possible for last year’s city day, due to reconstruction/maintenance works taking place. Fr John Prior, chaplain at Freemen’s said of the location:”It was nice to be back in St Lawrence’s following their recent refurbishment. We’re thankful for their hospitality.”

The service featured, in no small part, the singing of hymns, biblical readings from Psalm 121 and Hebrews 11 (followed by an involved sermon) as well as a warming Headmaster’s address (during which, the day was described as one of ‘many rites of passage’ for leaving students  – Upper Sixth in particular). That sentiment is definitely not lost on the younger years (i.e Lower 4) who’s future academic choices will mould their secondary school experiences, and potentailly their endeavours beyond that.

Following the service, students were able to eat their lunch in  the nearby City of London Guildhall, with its intricate interior for company, before heading off to their respective locations – the Upper Sixth were making their way to  the London Eye (and for many, resturants with friends afterwards) with Lower 4 bound for the Science Museum, supervised by their form tutors to beholden a plethora of immmersive information.
