I’m A Celebrity South Africa: When did Paul Burrell work for the Royal Family?
This time around campmates aren’t jetting all the way over to Australia, and instead spent time camping out in Kruger National Park in South Africa when the series was filmed last year.
Starting tonight, the cast includes Carol Vorderman, Helen Flanagan, Jordan Bango, Shaun Ryder, Helen Flanagan, Fatima Whitbread, Phil Tuffnel, Amir Khan, and Janice Dickinson.
This season will also mark the third time Paul, 64, who worked as a butler to Princess Diana, has donned the khaki and put his hand up for spine-tingling and stomach-churning challenges.
While he’s not been a winner before, this could be third time lucky for him.
But if you need a refresher on just who he is, and how he’s gone his previous two times in the jungle, here’s a reminder.
Who is Paul Burrell?
Born and raised in Derbyshire, Paul decided at the age of eight that he wanted to work at Buckingham Palace after a trip to London where he witnessed the Changing of the Guard.
Later studying hotel management, he entered Royal Service aged 18 as a Buckingham Palace footman, becoming Queen Elizabeth II’s personal footman a year later.
In 1987 he joined the household of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, where he worked as her butler until her death in 1997.
Four years later he went on to open a florist in Cheshire.
In 2003 Paul released his memoir, A Royal Duty, which detailed his role, but lead to a rift with Buckingham Palace.
Prince’s William and Harry also accused him of betraying their mother’s confidences.
When did he last appear on I’m A Celebrity?
The year after the release of his first book, Paul signed up to appear on the fourth season of I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!.
After 18 days in the Australian jungle, he was eventually named runner-up, with the title going to Joe Pasquale.
Then, in 2018, Paul participated in the fourth season of the Australian version.
Entering as an intruder two weeks in, he placed ninth in that season.
When being announced as part of the cast for the latest South Africa season, Paul said he loved doing it the first time around and that being asked again was ‘very special’.
‘It’s like coming into the final of the jungle Olympics. I had to eat kangaroo testicles in Australia and I am expecting everything to be bigger in South Africa,’ he said.
However it was during filming in September that the Queen died aged 96, with producers giving Paul the chance to quit and go home.
‘I said, “Listen, I’m better here. This is my sanctuary right now. If I go back home, it’ll be a circus and I’ll be sucked into that world. So let me stay here with the other celebrities, and I’ll share my grief with them.” Because it was their Queen too,’ he said.
He added: ‘I loved the Queen. She was a wonderful, wonderful lady. For me, she influenced my life, she shaped me – along with Diana later. They made me the man I am today. I have great respect and admiration for our late Queen.’
However, he did say it was ‘ridiculous to think I could win’ the competition after choosing to stay on.
‘I am only here to have a good time, to entertain people and to make everyone laugh,’ he said.
I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! All Stars starts today at 9pm on ITV1.
