Verstappen risks wrath of girlfriend Kelly Piquet with vow to get fat

Max Verstappen has laid out his retirement plans and has vowed to “get fat” when he brings the curtain down on his Formula 1 career. The Red Bull star has risked the wrath of his girlfriend Kelly Piquet by saying he will pile on the pounds when he gives up racing and insists he will not follow the lead of Michael Schumacher or Fernando Alonso by becoming an F1 veteran.

The Dutchman has often shared the view that he does not consider the sport to be the most important part of his life, and hinted he could retire before he equals Lewis Hamilton and Schumacher’s shared record of seven Drivers’ Championship titles.

Verstappen is still only 25 but clearly has bigger ambitions in his life than just racing – and some may revolve around some fine dining. The two-time world champgorion is forced to stick to a strict diet to avoid adding weight to his car and adheres to a gruelling fitness regime.

But when he finally gives up F1, Verstappen has set his sights on being able to gorge on as much fine food as he wants – and claims he will not follow Alonso or Schumacher by carrying on racing when he reaches his 40s.

“When I am 40, then I will no longer race,” he said, when interviewed on Viaplay’s ‘Max Verstappen: Anatomy of a Champion’ documentary. “Then I will eat what I want. I’m getting as fat as a pudding sandwich.”

But it seems his proclamation may not have gone well with his fitness guru girlfriend Piquet, 34. The Brazilian daughter of controversial former F1 racer Nelson Piquet is a former model and wellness expert, so she will have a good idea of what it takes to stay in shape.

And according to The Sun, she made it abundantly clear that she expects her world champion partner to maintain his slender frame. In the footage from the documentary, the camera turns to Piquet when she hears Verstappen’s comments and she can be seen repeatedly saying “no” to his suggestions.

While it seems she is not on board with the idea of Verstappen giving up his healthy lifestyle in his senior years, the pair have become one of the most popular couples in F1 and are certainly not afraid to pack on the PDA in front of the cameras.

Verstappen and Piquet have been dating for over two years but did not become an official item until January 2021. They now live together in Monaco and Piquet has proved to be a lucky charm for Verstappen, as he has won both of his titles in 2021 and 2022 since the pair struck up their romance.

Verstappen is not the first F1 driver that Piquet has been involved with. She was previously in a relationship with Daniil Kvyat – ironically the man Verstappen replaced at Red Bull – and they have a three-year-old daughter together.
